Description:

This small group food tour from Bologna will take you to visit the best producers of balsamic vinegar,  prosciutto ham, and Parmesan cheese in the Emilia Romagna region.

You will go inside the workshops to see how the products are made and enjoy tastings of these delicious specialties right at the producers facilities. Additionally during the day you will have a special lunch to try some of the best food and wine the region has to offer, all included.

The tour will start from a central meeting point location in Bologna where you will be picked-up by minivan. This tour can also be easily done from Florence, Venice, Milan or other cities with pick-up at the train station (please email us for more information).

The first visit of this daytrip will be at a Parmesan cheese factory. Arriving early will allow you to see the production process starting from the fresh milk until the final product: the king of all cheeses, the Parmigiano Reggiano or Parmesan as it is known around the world. This cheese is produced within a restricted area that includes Parma, Reggio Emilia, Modena, Bologna (on the western bank of Reno River) and Mantova (on the eastern bank of the Po River). The cheese is handmade by craftsmen using traditional methods handed down for more than eight centuries. You will also see the cellars where hundreds of rounds are stored for aging and you will have a tasting of this delicious cheese.

The second stop of our daytrip will be at of one of the oldest producer of the traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena. This type of balsamic vinegar is produced from cooked grape must, aged at least 12 years, and is protected under the European Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) system. We will have the chance to learn more about the techniques used to get such a special product, see the casks where the vinegar is stored for aging and we will taste different types of balsamic vinegar.

With the third stop we reach a traditional prosciutto crudo (ham) producer. Together with the tour inside the factory, we will also have the chance to taste this special product and will learn how only four ingredients are used to get such special product: pork, salt, air and time.

Finally we will reach a countryside trattoria to enjoy a lunch with other specialty food of the region and local wines (included in the price of the tour). At the end of the day the driver will take you back to starting point in the city center of Bologna (or at the train station).

This tour is done in small groups of about 15 people.

Good morning Andrea from a wet and windy Scotland. (Wish we were back in Bologna!) My wife and I were both on the gastronomic tour and enjoyed it immensely. The visits to the three locations were both interesting and fascinating. The guide, Riccardo, was exceptional in his knowledge and enthusiasm. 10 out of 10 for Riccardo!

Without doubt the best tour i've ever been on. The whole day exceeded our already very high expectations. We were promptly picked up and transported around in very comfortable vehicles. Our guide Alessandro made the day. Energetic, funny and informative we felt immersed in Italian culture and he really brought it to life. The lunch that followed was spectacular - huge and generous and boozy. Best value ever and the company were so helpful when we accidentally left our purchases in the car (sorry!) and delivered them back to us. If you book one tour, book this one.
